Where the Ozarks meets the great plains mulch is beneficial in a hot summer garden because it helps retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds. By acting as an insulator, mulch keeps the soil cooler, which is crucial for preventing root damage from extreme heat. It also reduces evaporation, helping plants stay hydrated longer and minimizing the need for frequent watering. Additionally, mulch smothers weeds, reducing competition for water and nutrients.
Wheat straw makes great mulch. It’s readily available in our area, reasonably priced and easy to use. Wheat straw is cut from wheat fields after the grain is harvested – so it’s a great way to reuse what we have and help support local farmers.
Don’t confuse wheat straw with hay! Hay is baled grass and if you use it to mulch your garden you may have a lot of sprouting grass that you don’t want.
Only use clean wheat straw for mulching your garden.
Wood chips also make great mulch and may be available from your city or county recycling center. Wood chips last longer than straw and break down over the season into nice black humus.
