Lawn Care
Lawn Care is at the heart of what we do at Clipper Lawn Service. A beautiful lawn is a happy lawn!
But it’s more than that – your lawn is a place for family and pets to play. Nothing compares to looking out your window and seeing birds, pets and family having a great time. To us it’s important to use healthy practices to care for your home and lawn.
Mowing
Mowing at the Right Time and Height: although we pay close attention to your preferred mowing schedule and the requirements of your neighborhood, there are also some other things we consider:
- Wet or Dry grass: we’ll do our best to mow when the grass is dry to prevent clumping and uneven cuts, and to care for grass that’s stressed from dry weather.
- One-third rule: we do our best to never remove more than one-third of the grass blade’s height at a time.
- Proper height: we always adjust the cutting height to maintain a healthy grass length (usually between 2.5 and 4 inches for most lawns).
- Mid-summer height increase: In hot, dry periods, we will consider increasing the mowing height by an inch to help the grass tolerate stress.
We keep mower blades sharp to promote clean cuts and prevent ragged edges that can lead to disease, and change the direction we mow each time to prevent mow patterns in the grass and to reduce soil compaction.
Aeration
Soil aeration is an additional service we can provide, based on needs and desires for your lawn.
Aeration provides numerous benefits for lawns and plants by improving air, water, and nutrient penetration into the soil. This process reduces soil compaction, allowing roots to grow deeper and stronger, leading to a healthier, more resilient lawn. Aeration also enhances water absorption, improves drainage, and promotes better nutrient uptake, ultimately leading to a more vibrant and thriving lawn.
Some of the lawn and soil makeup in Southeast Kansas needs additional attention regarding either retaining or depletion of water. In Southwest Missouri hard clay soils need improved drainage and in Northeast Oklahoma leeched soils or compacted soils need to be dealt with.
Weed Control
Our preferred methods regarding weed control lean more toward healthy best practices rather that the use of chemicals.
A thick, healthy lawn is the best defense against weeds. This involves proper mowing, fertilization, and regular aeration to improve soil health and encourage deep root growth.
Applying mulch around plants and in garden beds helps suppress weed growth by blocking sunlight and retaining moisture.
For some weeds, particularly in small areas, manual removal by pulling or digging could be the best answer.
Regular mowing, at the correct height for the specific grass type, helps control weeds and promotes healthy turf.
Proper watering techniques, including infrequent, deep watering, can also help prevent weed growth.
Regularly inspecting the lawn and addressing any breakthrough weeds promptly is essential for long-term weed control.
Weed control takes time, so be patient and work with us to achieve the desired results.
Fertilization
The best way to fertilize a lawn involves several key steps: applying the right type of fertilizer at the right time, using a spreader for even coverage, and ensuring proper watering. It’s crucial to choose a fertilizer based on your lawn’s needs and the season, apply it when the grass is dry and the weather is mild, and water it in thoroughly after application.
So, as you can see it’s a process that has to be planned out and scheduled properly. We’ll give you a good fertilizing plan if you feel it’s right for your lawn.
Lawn Seeding And Overseeding
The main difference between lawn seeding and overseeding lies in whether you’re starting a new lawn from scratch or improving an existing one. Seeding refers to establishing a new lawn by sowing grass seed on bare soil, while overseeding involves adding grass seed to an existing lawn to thicken it or fill in bare spots without disturbing the established turf.
We’ll work with you to improve your lawn condition and recommend the best ways to make your lawn vibrant.
